Ukraine has identified a new type of drone, likely of Iranian origin, used in Russia’s recent attacks and featuring advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-powered components, according to experts cited by Associated Press.
During recovery operations after a Russian assault, Ukrainian specialists found a drone equipped with a high-resolution camera, AI-powered computing systems, and a radio link.
According to experts, the radio connection enables operators in Russia to redirect the drone mid-flight and potentially control multiple units simultaneously.
At the same time, the onboard AI system allows it to navigate autonomously if communications are jammed.
The newly identified drone bears markings indicating its anti-jamming unit was made in Iran within the past year, and shares features with older Iranian-made Shahed models.
Experts noted this level of technology hasn’t been seen in drones used in Ukraine before, though it has appeared in Iranian missiles supplied to Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Drones have played a central role in the war with Ukraine, with Moscow carrying out near-daily strikes involving the use of unmanned aerial systems, including Iranian-designed technologies.
Recently, the Iranian drone program has expanded to involve another key Moscow ally.
Earlier this month, Russia revealed plans to help North Korea manufacture Iranian Shahed loitering munitions locally.
In exchange for military support and resources, Pyongyang has become increasingly tied to Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.
Moreover, growing military ties between Moscow and Tehran have led to the establishment of a drone production facility on Russian soil.
In 2023, a plant in Yelabuga, a city in the Republic of Tatarstan in western Russia, was opened in collaboration with Iran to manufacture drones supporting Russia’s campaign in Ukraine, marking a key step in expanding the country’s drone capabilities.
